Hmmmm

“In the world it is called Tolerance, but in hell it is called Despair, the sin that believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and remains alive because there is nothing for which it will die.”
- Dorothy Sayers

This quote kinda perplexes me. My first reaction was that I loved it; but now I'm not so sure...don't we all believe something, care for something, seek knowledge of something, find purpose in something...even the lost souls out there who still live under the tyranny of their own unbelief and suppression of the Truth?

Yeah, I don't like this quote. I know plenty of non-Christians who are really great people to be around and they believe in a lot of great ideals (none of these ideals, however, have any eternal significance).

Example: A good friend of mine takes a week of vacation from work every year and spends that week mentoring at a camp for children who have been neglected and abused. I'm pretty sure that shows that he believes in SOMETHING, even if it is that he believes in himself and his ability to bring some sort of change to the world.

I would say even "believing in nothing" etc. is, in itself, believing in something; the idea of "nothingness" if nothing else.
But then, really, wouldn't that still be finding a purpose in oneself...trying to make yourself either miserable or happy or whatever....still living for oneself.

Tough stuff. Hmmmmm is right.
